When Pauline met John: Mayor drops in to meet Waterford’s number one carer

The county’s 91-year-old number one carer got a special visit when the Mayor of Waterford City and County dropped in to see her and her son.

Pauline (Nic Craith) Mhic Parthalán, who lives in Maoil a’ Chóirne in Ring, was recently named the Netwatch Waterford Carer of the Year for looking after her son Joe.

And earlier this week Mayor John Pratt dropped by to pay tribute to the remarkable woman and congratulate the former nurse on her achievement.

“On a personal level, I deeply admire the work ongoing every day of the year across Waterford City and County by carers and I felt it was important that the office of Mayor be associated with Pauline’s achievement – as much for recognition for everyone involved in caring, as saying a particular ‘Go raibh maith agus comhgháirdeachas,” Cllr Pratt said after the visit.

Pauline was born in An Rinn in 1928 at a time when her grandaunt Margaret Power was married to the then Mayor of Waterford City Edward Walsh.

During their chat, Pauline recalled the tragic events at the end of World War Two when three local fishermen were killed by an sea mine off Helvick Head.

After finishing secondary schoool, she trained as a nurse in Cappagh Hospital, Dublin in 1947 before serving at Dublin’s Dr Steven’s Hospital and the Rotunda, where  she became a theatre nurse and midwife.

In 1954, Pauline moved to work at the Maimonides Hospital in Brooklyn, where she met and married her husband Joe McPartland in 1956 before moving to Joe’s native Belfast, where he established himself as a theatre and screen actor.

Pauline worked as a schools, district and public health nurse for 24 years, while Joe Jnr followed his father into the arts.

Pauline’s daughter Áine found herself back in her mother’s native An Rinn, where she served as Príomh Oide (Principal) at Meánscoil San Nioclás.

Following Joe Snr’s passing and Joe Jnr’s diagnosis with MS, Pauline returned to An Rinn in 2004 and has been carer for Joe at their modified home since.
