WEATHER FORECAST: Strange summer conditions continue as Waterford faces more heavy showers and high temperatures

‘Staycationers’ face a pretty miserable week ahead as Met Éireann forecast more muggy, thundery weather with heavy rainfall and just the odd glimpse of sunshine to look forward to.

A rainfall alert remains in place in Waterford and 13 other counties in the southern half of the country until just before midday today. Tonight will see more heavy showers with lowest temperatures of between 12 to 15 degrees.

Tuesday looks like being the best day of a pretty bad lot. There will be showers but Met Éireann said these will be “lighter than recent days” and forecast “good sunny spells” with the mercury rising to between 18 and 22 degrees.

The national forecaster said a band of rain will move northeastwards across the country on Wednesday, clearing to sunny spells and scattered showers in the southwest by evening.

Met Éireann said: “The rain will be accompanied by moderate to fresh east to southeast winds, strong near coasts. Highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees. The rain will clear northern coasts early Wednesday night, leaving scattered showers, some heavy at times, and clear spells.”

Thursday will see a mix of sunshine and heavy showers or longer spells of rain and highest temperatures of between 17 to 21 degrees.

And early indications suggest Friday will be a washout too. “A fresh to strong west to southwest flow is expected to steer in further showers or longer spells of rain from the Atlantic during Friday,” added Met Éireann.
