Waterford elderly targeted by heartless scammers posing as politicans offering Covid-19 tests
Waterford residents are being urged to look after elderly neighbours after it emerged that scammers posing as politicians have been targeting pensioners offering coronavirus tests.
Gardai issued a community alert along the Waterford – Tipperary border after some elderly residents were contacted by people claiming to be a local councillor saying they could set-up home testing with a Health Service Executive (HSE) team.
Garda confirmed that a number of people in Carrick-on-Suir and surrounding areas in county Waterford had been contacted by the caller claiming to be a local councillor who could set up the test for them and would call out within days.
However, the person they are referring to as a councillor has in fact retired from public service and took to social media to warn people that their name was being used inappropriately. The former councillor said: “This is a bogus call please ignore…Guards have been alerted.”
Gardai are asking anyone who may have received a call like this to contact their local Garda station immediately so they can confirm the time and location of the call.
