PICTURED: The ‘scandalous’ overcrowding in Psychiatric Unit
These are the shocking pictures which show patients sleeping on floors and makeshift bedding on corridors in the Psychiatric Unit at University Hospital.
“Imagine yourself going on to a ward in a distressed state and being told you have to sleep in a corridor with only a screen to give you dignity,” Sinn Féin’s Cllr John Hearne said.
“Imagine being a 14 year old child thinking about suicide being put in here, absolutely scandalous.”
Cllr Hearne’s comments come amid the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) saying overcrowding at the unit has reached unprecedented levels.
They say there has been an increase on assaults on staff in recent months and are calling for an independent investigation into overcrowding at the unit in UHW.
Commenting on PNA’s statement the Waterford Councillor added:
“The nurses’ union and the PNA have been highlighting this for months. Due to overcrowding many nurses have being assaulted.
“Please support our nurses and patients and demand dignity for our most vulnerable people in psychiatric care.”
