Waterford Council gives green light for long-awaited second cath lab at UHW
Waterford City and County Council has given the go-ahead for the construction of a second cardiac cath lab on the grounds of University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
The development will consist of a two-storey extension to the existing hospital on an existing flat roof with accommodation, which will include a Specialist Procedures Room, Preparation and Recovery Room, and diagnostic facilities.
Fine Gael Waterford General Election candidate John Cummins welcomed the “hugely positive” development, which he said is “a massive step forward in the campaign for 24/7 Cardiac Care at UHW”.
Cllr Cummins (pictured below) added: “It has taken huge determination on behalf of campaign groups, the general public and politicians to get us to this point where planning has been granted for a second permanent laboratory. It is now imperative that the HSE is not allowed to sit on their hands and that the tender documents for the works are published and a contractor appointed without delay and that is my focus in the weeks ahead.”
Interviews are due to take place on Wednesday, January 22, for the appointment of two additional cardiologists at UHW.
