The Tramore Trailway: Support grows for new Greenway from Waterford city
An online petition calling for a new greenway between Waterford city and Tramore is attracting huge support locally.
The ‘Tramore Waterford Trailway’ has built up almost 1,000 followers after it set up its new Facebook page just days ago.
Some local political representatives have already expressed their support for the project, which would see a new greenway from the city to the seaside town along the disused Waterford – Tramore railway line.
Maurice O’Bryne, who set up the online group, encouraged followers to “speak as one” to make the project a reality, adding: “It is only people power that will achieve our goal.”
Mr O’Byrne acknowledged several obstacles need to be overcome, including financing and land ownership, but he insisted: “All will be dealt with in due course. Our prime objective at present is group numbers, to get people on board supporting our mission. The more people, the greater likelihood of success.
“Some of our political representatives have already expressed a desire to see this happen and we are delighted to have their support added to this group.”
Waterford Sinn Féin councillor and local People Before Profit general election candidate Una Dunphy are among those who have voiced their support for the new greenway.
Ms Dunphy posted on the group’s page: “Old railway line to Tramore. Can be reclaimed!”
