The thin bruised line: 13 gardai attacked in Waterford last year
Thirteen gardai were assaulted in Waterford last year.
Over half of these (7) missed at least a day in work due to injuries sustained in an attack, according to Freedom of Information figures.
Four local gardai recieved minor injuries during a single incident while responding to a a distrubance on Bridge Street last October.
Three officers in the Waterford division were out for between one and three months due to the injuries they suffered in the line of duty.
Two of the officers sustained bone fractures, with a third suffering a dislocation. Two locally-based gardai sustained bone fractures with a third suffering a dislocation.
More than half of those injured were left with bruising and grazes or were bitten during the course of their work. One officer suffered an open wound while two other incidents were not categorised.
The Garda Representative Association has called for greater protection for rank-and-file offers, including body cameras and taser guns.
