SPONSORED: Stellar cellar makes Worldwide Wines a global success
Declan and Claire Brady share a love of wine and a love of Waterford. So when they decided to open an off-licence they wanted to make it one their native city would be proud of.
They set out to create the best off-licence in Waterford City and their Worldwide Wines has achieved that – and more.
Within a year of the 2001 opening, it had won an award for the best off-licence in Munster and a year later it was voted best in Ireland.
Since then, it has never been out of the top three in the national awards and has won numerous other accolades.
So what makes Worldwide Wines so special? For a start, there’s an amazing selection of fine wines, chosen personally by Declan and Claire – a labour of love for the couple who are happy to devote their time, expertise and enthusiasm to ensuring that each customer leaves satisfied and confident in their choice.
Declan and Claire bring a personal touch to Worldwide Wines. Every product is tried and tested to give customers the best possible quality and value for money – and the owners will make sure they get the best advice.
If you want to know what wine goes best with the Sunday roast, with fish, game or fowl, or just for sipping by the fire, Declan and Claire will be happy share their expertise.
At Worldwide Wines, as many as 4,000 wines are tasted each year. “Whenever possible, our wines are sourced from small boutique wineries, many using organic production methods and operated on sustainable principles,” explains Declan. “And we only select our wines on merit.”
Worldwide Wines is housed in a 1960s ice-cream parlour on the Dunmore Road.
The iconic building has the look of an old -fashioned tobacconist’s shop, with polished wood, gleaming brass and leather finish.
Customers love to browse there and, when they do, they are often surprised to discover that Worldwide Wines is indeed a tobacconist – the only one in Waterford City – selling pipes, tobacco and quality Cuban cigars.
They also stock a multitude of cocktail accessories, hip flasks, corkscrews, bottle stoppers, as well as hampers and gift packs to suit all budgets and delight any connoisseur .
The extensive and exciting wine selection has enabled Worldwide Wines to live up to its name and it has attracted a truly international clientele. But wine is not the only drink in its cellars.
Fine old malts, brandies and liqueurs from all over the world sit alongside local specialities. The craft beer selection comes from near and far and, like the wine, has been tested and tasted so that customers can be assured of the finest quality.
It would be a shame not visit this lovely shop, but it is not strictly necessary as they offer an extensive online service and free delivery for orders costing more than €150.
Their website allows customers to shop from home with a virtual tour of the well-stocked shelves. Some customers like to pick their favourites from the comfort of their home and then call in to discuss them with Claire, Declan or the knowledgeable staff.
And this busy couple will always make time to talk. “Talking about wine,” says Declan. “That’s not work – that’s a pleasure!”
