Quick-thinking hero praised for saving life by throwing buoy to person struggling in Suir

A quick-thinking member of the public has been thanked for throwing a life buoy to a person struggling in the River Suir last night.

Gardai were also praised for using a ladder to climb down into the water and the save the person while Waterford Marine Search and Rescue (WMSAR) also attended.

WMSAR launched its boat to the scene near to the bus station on the quays and arrived along with members of Waterford Gardai.

“Our rescue boat was launched to a person in the River Suir behind the bus station,” WMSAR said.

“A great team effort from the person who threw a life buoy to the casualty until members of Waterford Gardai arrived on scene along with NAS and a member of WMSAR swift water rescue team.

“Quick thinking from the Gardai who were equipped with a ladder and were able to, with the help of our team, safely remove the casualty from the water while our rescue boat stood by if needed.

“To the person who threw the life buoy to the casualty in the water YOU saved a life tonight. We hope the casualty gets the help they need at this difficult time.”
