Pride of the Déise to stage virtual parade ‘extravaganza’
Waterford ‘Pride of the Déise’ has announced plan to host a series of virtual Pride events over the June Bank Holiday weekend.
The group initially planned a citywide pride celebration. But when the Covid-19 pandemic and social distancing measures made this untenable, the group said they decided to move concentrate their efforts online instead.
Pride of the Déise Cam Lyttle chairperson said: “While our ultimate hope was to bring people together physically in solidarity and celebration, there is still a lot that can be achieved while supporting the efforts to limit the impact of Covid-19. We feel honoured to be able to platform our community online and share the vibrancy of Waterford and it’s LGBT+ community with a wider audience.”
All the planned events are free, with most being streamed live across social media. These include:
Scéal? The online festival will open with interviews and stories collected from members of the local LGBT community, which will ne presented via Pride of the Déise’s social media accounts from 2pm on Friday, May 29.
Pride Extravaganza: The organisers have teamed up with Open Tempo to bring “a soundtrack of fun and funky beats so we can march together along a virtual parade route on Saturday, June 30 from 4pm. It will feature live DJs Johnny and Dr. Phil from Open Tempo, who organisers say will “bring live reggae, disco and house sets to our Facebook Page to help you dance the Saturday evening away”.
Youth Takeover: Taking place on Sunday, organisers say the line-up is “curated by and for LGBT+ Young people in collaboration with ChillOUT LGBTI+ Youth Group”. They added: “Our Youth Committee will be hosting Instagram live events on LGBTI+ awareness at 12pm and music from Aliensincaves at 4pm via @PrideOfTheDeise on Instagram.
