Our first citizen: Cllr Damien Geoghegan elected new Mayor of Waterford

Waterford has a new first citizen. Earlier this week Fine Gael councillor Damien Geoghegan was elected as the new Mayor of Waterford City and County Council.

The Dungarvan-based councillor, who contested last February’s General Election, saw off a challenge from Sinn Féin’s Conor McGuinness earlier this week after he received the backing of Labour, Green Party and a number of Independent councillors to be elected by 17 votes to 15.

Fianna Fáil’s city-based councillor Eddie Mulligan, who also contested the last General Election, has been elected Deputy Mayor.

Cllr Geoghegan replaces outgoing mayor, Labour’s John Pratt.
