‘No political will to do right by Waterford’ – councillor hits out as Budget crisis deepen

The Sinn Féin leader on Waterford City and County Council has hit out at the Government, accuding it of “failing to address” the budget crisis facing the local authority.

Conor D. McGuinness spoke out after a meeting with the Minister of Local Government, Ferrybank-resident John Paul Phelan, failre to secure the €1.3 million needed to plug the hole in the council’s finances.

“I met with the minister last week as part of a cross-party delegation of Waterford Councillors and I challenged John Paul Phelan to address the mess that his Government created,” said Councillor McGuinness.

“While one local councillor used the opportunity to lobby his party colleague on councillors’ pay I made the case that Waterford has been hard hit by the economic crisis and has not seen the same recovery that Dublin has. Unemployment remains above the national average and the council’s income base is much lower than that in other city and merged authorities.”

Councillor McGuinness (pictured below) added: “Government created this crisis and are content to see Waterford take a net cut of €14.5 million over the lifetime of this council. How long can Waterford be expected to bear the brunt of indifference and disdain from Government buildings?

“It’s become clear that there is no political will amongst the confidence-and-supply Government to do right by Waterford. Fine Gael, the Independent Alliance and Fianna Fáil are content for our communities and our employers to take a hit due to the Irish Water fiasco.”
