Man who died following Waterford assault named locally
The man who died following an assault in Portlaw has been named locally as John Butler.
It is believed the dead man, who is reported to be from the Carrick-on-Suir area, was assaulted during an argument outside a pub in the town where a group had been socialising together.
He was discovered in a critical condition in the hallway of his home on Brown Street just after 2.30am on Saturday morning by members of the emergency services.
Mr Butler died a short time later at University Hospital Waterford (UHW).
The 21-year-old man arrested by Gardai following the death continues to be held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Tramore Garda Station.
The course of the Garda investigation will now progress based on the results of a post mortem examination to be conducted at UHW.
Gardaí have preserved the scene for a full forensic and technical examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
They have appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident involved to contact them to assist their inquiries.
Gardaí are also checking CCTV footage from the area to determine if the incident was caught on camera.
