Man (22) charged with ramming Garda car following high-speed chase in Waterford

A 22-year-old man who was arrested on Sunday following a high-speed chase which saw a Garda car rammed was charged when he appeared before Waterford District Court yesterday afternoon.

He has since been released from custody on bail and is due to appear before the court again on June 9.

According to a statement released by gardai last night “on Sunday  April 19, 2020 at approximately 6.35pm, after a vehicle failed to stop for Gardaí in Waterford city, a managed containment operation ensued which ended when the offending vehicle stopped at Castletown, Waterford.

“During the course of the containment operation an official Garda car was damaged but no persons were injured.”

Following the man’s arrest in Tramore after he failed to stop at a checkpoint in Waterford City, he was taken to Waterford Garda station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Gardai have urged any eyewitness or motorists with dashcam footage to contact Waterford Garda Station on 051 305 300.
