Volunteers answer the call for marathon 12-hour hike along Waterford Greenway

This Friday a very special event is taking place, spanning the length of the Waterford Greenway.

Local volunteers will pound the landeways on the hugely popular hiking and cycling trail as part of the Samartians annual fundraising event.

The 12-hour walk will get underway at 4am, to highlight the fact that Samaritans’ service operates in the loneliest hours of the morning.

Organisers stress that participants “will be adhering to all restrictions in place at the time”.

A spokesperson said: “The 24th of July is a special day for Samaritans. 24/7 is a day we use each year to highlight that we are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

“This year on the 24th of July (24/7) our volunteers will be embarking on a 12 hour walk from Waterford to Dungarvan on Waterford Greenway.”

Last year Samaritan volunteers in Ireland answered a call for help every 49 seconds. Volunteers answered a total of 583,277 phone calls and received no fewer than 66,479 texts and 19,989 emails.
