LATEST: Search for missing fisherman off Hook Head called off for night

The search for a fisherman who has been missing since the trawler he was working on sank off Hook Head over the weekend has been stood down for the evening.

The search operation for Willie Whelan, who is from county Wexford, was hampered by poor weather today, and conditions are also expected to be difficult when it resumes tomorrow.

Another fisherman, grandfather Joe Sinnott (65) from Kilmore, died at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) over the weekend after he was rescued from the sea.

The search has been focusing on an area about six nautical miles south of Hook Head.

Mr Whelan and Mr Sinnott had been fishing for scallops after setting off from Duncannon on Friday morning. They were expected home at about 11pm on Saturday but their boat sank as they made their way towards the coast.

Today’s search was hampered by poor weather and visibility. It got underway just after 9am and involved lifeboats from Kilmore Quay and Dunmore East, the R117 helicopter from Waterford Airport and the LE Ciara naval vessel.
