LATEST: One further death and 363 new cases of virus, anger over crowds of students and reports of house parties

One more person has died after contracting the coronavirus as 363 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus currently stands at 1,803. There are now 35,740 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 154 cases are in Dublin, 40 in Cork, 23 in Donegal, 16 in Wexford, 15 in Roscommon, 14 in Galway, 14 in Monaghan, 11 in Kildare, 11 in Meath, 11 in Wicklow, 9 in Limerick, 6 in Clare, 5 in Mayo, 5 in Tipperary with the remaining 29 cases in 9 other counties.

The latest cases were confirmed after widespread outrage was expressed today at videos that showed hundreds of students congregating in Galway city-centre.

This week is freshers’ week in Galway and numerous videos have emerged of groups of dozens or more students closely congregated and not adhering to public-health guidelines.

Senator Ollie Crowe also confirmed that gardaí called to “12 to 14 house parties” in the city last night.

Numerous councillors and officials posted the videos online, condemning the actions.

Senator Crowe called for the to be drafted in to ensure public-health guidelines were being adhered to.

“I was in touch with the gardaí in the last two nights and I will be calling on my colleagues to ensure the gardaí get whatever assistance they need. It’s freshers’ week here in Galway and the Gardaí are really under-resourced,” Senator Crowe told RTÉ’s Claire Byrne.
