A nasty spell: Waterford magic man suffers horrific injury while practicing new trick
Waterford magician Keith Barry has revealed how he suffered a serious injury while practicing a new magic trick for an RTÉ show.
The hypnotist and self-styled “mentalist” said his abdominal muscles were ripped off his ribs while he was training for an upside-down straight-jacket escape.
“I stood out of bed and literally could not move. I couldn’t get my hand to a phone to call someone to help me. It was really scary,” he said in an interview with The Sunday World.
“Eventually after five minutes or so I slowly got out of it, I was going to call an ambulance. I slowly started moving, but then when I looked in the mirror my whole stomach was skewed the wrong way, it was like a banana.”
The 43-year-old Waterford man was taken to hospital, where an MRI scan revealed he had torn his abdominal oblique muscles off his ribcage.”
He has since had several sessions at a top sports injury clinic Dublin.
Keith added: “Through the jigs and the reels I am nearly better. There was a time when every sneeze and every cough caused me pain and I didn’t sleep for about three months.”
Keith Insanity Tour, which kicks off in Castlebar on December 27, will conclude in his native city on March 14. Tickets are available from http://www.ticketmaster.ie
