Katie Taylor wins to become two-weight champion
Katie Taylor last night became only the third Irish boxer to become a two-weight world champion with a unanimous points victory over Christina Linardatou.
Taylor, following Carl Frampton and Steve Collins, now has a 15-0 professional record with this win over her Greek opponent.
The 33-year-old from Bray now holds the WBO super lightweight alongside her WBA, WBO, IBF, WBC and The Ring lightweight belts.
“I was delighted to be making history,” Taylor said after the fight, which was held in the Manchester Arena in front of 10,000 passionate fans.
“We always knew that this would be tough fight. I boxed beautifully on the outside.”
Taylor won convincingly on the judges’ cards with two of them giving her the contest by 97-93 while the third official scored it 96-94.
