Housing crisis: Significant rise in number of Waterford families seeking social homes
The amount of people applying for social housing in Waterford is on the rise.
Over the past 12 months there has been a 12% increase in the number of people approaching Waterford City and County Council for housing.
Figures obtained by WaterfordNow.ie reveal more than 100 people applied for social housing up until the end of November 2019 than the same period last year.
More people have applied for social housing in the first 11 months of 2019 (973) than they did in the whole of 2018 (949).
The total number of applications approved for social housing in 2019 is also higher than 2018. So far this year 662 people have been approved for social housing. Some 674 people were approved in 2018.
The figures also reveal over two-thirds of people who apply for social housing in Waterford City and County have their applications approved. In 2018, over 71% of those who applied were approved for social housing. This figure fell to 69% this year.
