Ferrett and dogs rescued from van stopped at Covid checkpoint in Waterford

Nine dogs and a ferrett have been rescued following a search of a vehicle at a Garda checkpoint in Waterford city.

The discovery was made at a routine Covid-19 checkpoint at Newrath yesterday afternoon.

The city dog warden and members of Waterford Animal Welfare assisted the gardai to check on the health of the animals,

A man was arrested at the scene. He is due to appear before Waterford District Court.

Gardai said they could not comment on whether the animals were stolen or not as investigations are ongoing into the incident and the origins of the animals.

All the animals have been checked by a vet and are being temporarily homed at the Waterford Dog Shelter.
