Dramatic fall in number of Waterford unemployed as 6,563 sign on
The number of people signing on the live register in Waterford has fallen dramatically in the past 12 months reaching lows not seen since the Celtic Tiger era.
The latest live register figures released today by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) shows a 6.9% drop in the amount of people signing on in Waterford compared to December 31, 2018.
On December 31, 2019, 6,563 people were on the live register in Waterford, down 484 on the previous year of 7,047.
The biggest drop in figures was in Waterford city where 7.57% drop was recorded of people signing on the register now compared to last year, when 5,974 people were signing on, as opposed to 5,522 currently, a reduction of 452.
County Waterford saw a 2.99% drop from 1,073 people signing on at the end of 2018 to 1,041 signing on at the end of 2019 – a reduction of just 32.
For the first time in 13 years, the number of people signing on in Waterford fell to less than 7,000 when it passed that mark in September and has remained below 7,000 since.
Nationally, the number of people signing on the live register in 2019 fell by 18,000, from 203,300 in December 2018 to 185,300 at the end of December 2019, a decrease of 8.85%.
