Dragon slayer: Waterford rugby star Thomas Ahern set to take on Wales

Following a mammoth performance for Ireland’s U20 rugby team against Scotland last weekend, Waterford’s Thomas Ahern has been tasked with dousing Welsh flames.

The towering 19-year-old, 110kg 6ft 9 lock was one of Ireland’s standout performers in their 38 -26 victory over the Scots last Friday night in Cork and capped off an eye-catching performance with a try if his own.

His fearsome attitude to the breakdown and handling skills sees him get the nod once more to start in the engine room of the Irish pack tonight against a Welsh team who will be spitting fire following a shock 7-17 loss at home to Italy last week.

Ahern, who began his rugby career at Waterpark Rugby Club and currently lines out for Shannon in Limerick has been handed the number five jersey for tonight’s match against the Welsh in Cork’s Irish Independent Park.

The match kicks off at 7.15pm. The match is live on RTÉ2 television.
