COYGIG: FAI bringing international matches to Waterford and Tramore

The FAI have announced the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-17s will play two play matches in Waterford next week, one in the RSC and one in Tramore.

While the girls will also use Waterford as their base for the UEFA European Championship Elite Round Qualifiers which kick off in March.

They begin their preparations with a double-header friendly against Iceland next weekend.

The first match will be played under the lights of the RSC on Friday, February 14 at 7pm and the second game on Sunday at 2pm in Tramore AFC’s ground.

The girls in green have made it to the elite stage by scoring 21 goals in victories over Albania, Lithuania, and Greece.  They face Denmark, Serbia, and Austria looking to advance to the finals tournament in Sweden later this year.

Manager James Scott is looking forward to the challenge Iceland will pose and bringing his squad to Waterford.

“The squad and staff are really looking forward to the games against Iceland. We played against them twice last year in Iceland and they proved to be excellent opponents, so it will be a very good test ahead of the Elite Qualifiers in March.

“Our base for the friendlies will be Waterford and this will also be our venue for the Elite Qualifiers. We will be able to familiarise ourselves with the stadium, hotel and training ground.

“We would like to call on the local people to come support the team in what I’m sure will be two entertaining games.”
