COVID-19 LATEST: 14 more die as 727 new cases of Covid-19 are confirmed

Fourteen more people have died after contracting the coronavrius as 727 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

It brings to 334 the number of people who have died from the virus so far. There are now a total of 9,655 confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country.

Twelve of the new fatalities were in the east of the country, with two in the west.

The latest casualties were confirmed after the chair of the Epidemiological Modelling Group advising the National Public Health Emergency Team warned there is a “real danger” of a second wave of virus cases if the changing of restrictions in place is not done properly.

On Friday Taoiseach Leo Varadkar announced that the Covid-19 restrictions will be extended for a further three weeks until Tuesday, May 5.

Among the measures are physical distancing, travel restrictions and cocooning for all those aged 70 and above.

Speaking on RTÉ’s This Week programme, Professor Philip Nolan said there was a “real danger” if not done carefully that we will get a second Covid-19 wave.

Professor Nolan said that it is not done correctly we could see a rapid re-emergence of the disease, as well as a rise to a “potentially very dangerous peak”.

He Nolan said Ireland currently appears to be in a “very stable situation” in relation to how it is coping with the the Covid-19 crisis.

But he warned the Government should only consider lifting of restrictions after May 5 if the measures currently in place result in a significant reduction in cases by then.
