Tramore woman appointed to head up WLR’s news operation
WLR has appointed Julie Smyth as News and Sport Editor of the award-winning local radio station
WLR managing director Des Whelan said the Tramore journalist, who started her career with the BBC, will be responsible for “day to day management of the station’s news and sports output, implementing the station’s strategy, and identifying and training new talent”.
Mr Whelan added: “Julie is a very accomplished journalist and broadcaster with over two decades of experience across print, broadcast and digital media.”
Ms Smyth said she is “honoured” to take on the role and to be working with “a great team” at WLR.
Speaking of the challenges ahead, she added: “Now more than ever, people need information they can trust and that is relevant to them.
“There is no doubt this is a challenging time for local radio and for journalism, but I’m excited to meet those challenges head on.
“There’s a great team in place, and I’m privileged to join them.”
