Counting gets underway in by-elections

Counting in yesterday’s by-elections are due to begin at 9am this morning with results expected by 6pm this evening.

Turnout was very low in all four by-election constituencies: Cork North Central, Dublin Fingal, Wexford and Dublin Mid-West.

The by-elections were held to replace TDs elected to the European Parliament in May of this year.

It is unlikely any candidate will be elected on the first count as they are unlikely to reach the quota of 50% plus one.

Fianna Fáil, Labour, the Greens, Fine Gael and at least one Independent could all be in the shake-up as the day progresses.
