BuskAid hits the right note on homelessness as it returns for fourth year
BuskAid is back and this year the team are hoping to add substantially to the €5,500 they raised last year.
Taking place on December 21, this year’s event will support Tinteán Housing Association which provides accommodation with support to women experiencing homelessness in Waterford City and County.
Set up by Waterford’s Tadhg Williams in December 2016 as a response to the homelessness crisis, he issued a call out to musicians to raise badly needed funds for vital services through BuskAid and more than €15,000 has been donated since.
“Busking brings life and culture to the streets of our towns, as well as giving young musicians an invaluable opportunity to hone their craft,” co-founder Derek Flynn says.
“In all my years busking, I’ve only ever experienced a positive reaction from the public, and never more so than during BuskAid.
“When you’re busking, you’re sharing the streets with those who live on it. It’s hard to not take notice of their situation”.
Drawing on members of the Arts community, the mixed bag of have come together to build a unique festival that alters how we look at homelessness.
