Burglar who crashed into Garda car after spate of burglaries in Waterford is arrested

A man suspected of carrying out a spate of burglaries across Waterford and Cork and was involved in a dramatic chase that ended with him crashing into a Garda car and another vehicle has been arrested.

The 28-year-old man is due to appear before a special sitting of Cork City District Court at 6pm this evening.

Gardai this morning confirmed they arrested the suspect in Mallow in neighbouring Cork on Tuesday “on suspicion of being involved in numerous burglary offences across counties Cork and Waterford “. These burglaries occurred on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 and Friday, May 11, 2018.

The man is currently being detained at Mayfield Garda Station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.

A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “On Friday 11th May 2018, following reports of a number of burglaries in the Southern Region, a Garda operation was implemented in an attempt to intercept and arrest a suspected offender, the man fled the scene in a car and collided with two occupied vehicles (one of which was a Garda vehicle). No injuries were reported during the incident.”
