‘Account for your actions’ – Cullinane calls out Waterford Senator over ‘golfgate’

Waterford TD David Cullinane has turned the screw on embattled Fine Gael Senator John Cummins.

The local Sinn Féin deputy took to social media to challenge Senator Cummins to “account for his actions” and to give an interview about his decision to attend the now infamous golf society dinner in county Galway in breach of Covid-19 regulations.

In a statement after the story broke, Senator Cummins apologioed for his “lapse of judegment”, saying: “I have been so careful in adhering to the public health advise since February and this was a lapse in judgement for which I genuinely apologise unreservedly.”

However, Senator Cummins, who has been subjected to intense – and in some cases extremely abusive – criticism online in recent days, has so far declined to be interviewed about his attendence at the golf dinner.

Deputy Cullinane (pictured below) heaped further pressure on Senator Cummins when he effectively called him out on social media saying: “What John Cummins did was wrong. And he wasn’t alone. It was a mistake and people are rightly angry. He has faced an horrendous couple of days.”I wish for him he would do an interview and account for his actions. My Mam thought me to be kind but also to face up to my mistakes. And it is with kindness I say he should speak out.”
