A lot of bottle: Launch of new Waterford whisky will see 1,000 connoisseurs descend on city
A thousand whisky connoisseurs are set to descend on Waterford in a few weeks, lucky enough to be one of the few to pick up a first edition whisky from the Waterford Distillery.
The very first whisky (this is how Waterford Distillery are spelling it) released from the distillery will be made available on April 25 but to get your hands on a bottle of the fine single malt, you actually have to go to the distillery on Gratten Quay in the city and be handed your very rare bottle.
The distillery’s first batch will be called – The 1st Cuvée: Pilgrimage and 1,500 bottles will be made. Of these 1,000 bottles will have the slogan “I WAS THERE” on the bottles label, authenticating the it’s first edition origin.
Set up in 2016 by Mark Reynier, the man behind the renaissance of the Bruichladdich distillery on the famed Isle of Islay in Scotland, Waterford Distillery uses different grains, many of the traditional Irish Hunter variety, from different soils around county Waterford to come up with the terrior of the single malt whisky.
A spokesperson for Waterford Distillery said: “This open day is to celebrate Waterford Whisky’s coming of age, our Irish Single Malt Whisky’s debut.
“We’re delighted to open our gates to those curious to see what we’ve been up to these last five years.
“To mark this historic moment, the launch of Waterford Whisky, a limited edition commemorative bottling has been created by our Head Distiller.
“Ned (Gahan) has brought together each of the 36 farms we distilled in our first year, each one location, captured in spirit, a unique Waterford distillate.
Together, they make a mind-bogglingly complex and multi-layered single malt.”
To become one of the lucky 1,000 who will receive the 1st Cuvée, you can buy a ticket for €170 which will get you entry to the event, a tasting glass, two 25ml drams and a limited edition bottle of first whisky.
Their other offering – Waterford Whisky will also be available on the day.
For those more curious about the distillery, rather than its product, tickets are available at €20 solely for the launch.
