A further nine more deaths, 2-metre rule threatens September back-to-school plans

A further nine people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 46 new cases of the virus were confirmed this evening.

It brings the overall death toll as a result of the virus to 1,639. There are now 24,841 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily updates from the Department of Health.

The latest casualties were confirmed as the Minister for Education, Joe McHugh, admitted it is hard to see all students being back at school in September if the two-metre social distancing rule remains in place.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today with Sarah McInerney, the minister said the Department of Education will publish a roadmap for the reopening of schools in two weeks’ time.

He said while it is his mission to ensure as many students as possible can return to class, he warned that the two-metre rule would make that difficult.

Schools are due to reopen on a phased basis in late August or early September according to the Government’s roadmap for the gradual lifting of Covid-19 restrictions.

A mixed or blended learning approach, with students alternating between lessons at school and home, is among the options being discussed for the next school year.
