The art of learning: 82-year-old grandfather graduates with honours from WIT

One of Ireland’s oldest undergraduate students has graduated with honours after he completed a full-time course at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) with style.

Tom Boyle (pictured) was thrilled as he recieved his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) during a graduate ceremony at WIT earlier this wake.

Tom was joined at the event by his wife Phyllis and their seven proud children.

The pensioner travelled from his home in Ramsgrange, Co Wexford, every week to attend his course in Waterford.

After returning to college, Tom initially studied law at WIT, but later switched to arts.

He said his own regret was not returning to his studies sooner, and that it was something he wished he had done decades ago.

The mature student shot to fame in 2016 when a video of his classmates singing ‘Happy Birthday’ on the day of his 79th anniversary celebrations went viral after being posted online.
