Track record: Waterford has highest number of rail passenger journeys
A record 1.49 million passenger journeys were recorded on the Dublin to Waterford rail line last year, new figures reveal.
The number of passenger journeys on the line increased by 7.2% on 2018.
Economic improvements, greater numbers of people in employment and increased tourist numbers visiting Waterford all contributed to the rise in passenger numbers.
With growth in demand set to continue, Iarnród Éireann has ordered 41 new carriages for Commuter and Intercity services.
The State company confirmed key peak Dublin to Waterford services will be among the trains benefiting from additional capacity.
Iarnród Éireann said: “The Waterford North Quays Redevelopment is also key to the future of which will see the station move to form part of a new transport hub, improving integration with other transport modes, and enhancing rail connectivity and accessibility to the city for generations to come.”
