LATEST: Waterford among 1,283 new cases of virus as three further deaths confirmed

A further three people have died after contracting the coronavirus as 1,283 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed this evening.

The overall death toll as a result of the virus now stands at 1,852. There are now 49,962 confirmed cases of Covid-19 across the country, according to the latest daily briefing from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).

The breakdown of the latest cases is as follows: 408 are in Dublin, 156 in Cork, 88 in Kildare, 80 in Meath, 55 in Limerick, with the remaining 496 cases spread across the other 21 counties.

The latest cases were confirmed ahead of tomorrow’s Cabinet meeting, at which it is widely expected further restrictions will be announced.

Higher Education Minister Simon Harries earlier said “decisive and nationwide” acrtion will be taken during an interview with RTÉ’s The Week in Politics programme.
