Cheque mates: Pharma firm donate €35,000 to Waterford Food Bank
Waterford Food Bank received a timely boost to its funds this week when it was presented with a cheque for €35,000.
The donation was made by Waterford’s West Pharmaceutical Services which has been a partner of the Waterford Food Bank since it began in 2017.
Demand for the food bank service has increased drastically as a result of the Covid19 crisis and the donation from West has come at a critical time.
“We were concerned that individuals in the community were struggling through the COVID-19 pandemic and wanted to provide support during this challenging time,” said Brendan Fitzpatrick, Director Operations, of West Pharmaceutical Services Waterford said.
Waterford Food Bank works closely with local agencies, charities and organisations in Waterford including the St Vincent de Paul to support those in need.
Food hampers are distributed weekly to families and individuals who are living in food poverty.
Each food hamper contains items such as bread, tea, cereal, tinned food, vegetables, eggs and other basic food stuffs.
The majority of non-perishable food items are surplus products from supermarkets and food manufacturers, along with fresh meat, vegetables and dairy provided freely or at a discounted price by local suppliers.
Waterford Food Bank is part of the FoodCloud initiative and is a Waterford Area Partnership programme.
“Waterford Food Bank are extremely grateful to West Pharma for their very generous donation to the service,” Richard Grant, Chairman of the Waterford Food Bank said.
“Over the last number of weeks due to Covid-19, the Food Bank has experienced a significant increase in the number of requests received for its service, as a result, has significantly increased its capacity to distribute food to families and individuals who are in most need.”
