BREAKING: First case of coronavirus contracted by patient in Ireland who hadn’t travelled abroad
A man in Cork who has tested positive for Covid-19 is believed to be the first person in Ireland to have contracted the disease without leaving the country.
He was the seventh person in the Republic – and tenth on the the island – to have caught the highly contagious virus but the first not to have been been to northern Italy in recent weeks.
However another six cases have since been reported and it is unknown where they contracted the virus.
It is also believed the person in Cork was not in contact with any of the existing known cases which raises the possibility of community spread of the virus and that it has remained undetected within the population before the first case was confirmed.
Earlier today, it emerged that one member of the family of four in the West of Ireland who have coronavirus is a healthcare professional.
The family had recently travelled to northern Italy.
